WHAT PEOPLE SEE—AND WHAT THEY DON’T

My name is Emma.

When people first meet me, many notice that I have Down syndrome.

Some speak to the person beside me instead of speaking directly to me. Some assume ordinary tasks will be too difficult. Others see my disability before they see what I can do.

What they usually do not see are the quiet hours behind every finished ornament.

They do not see me sitting at my small worktable, carefully choosing each color.

They do not see me start over when a detail is crooked.

They do not see how many times I practice connecting the smallest pieces until my hands remember what to do.

And they do not see the pride I feel when I finally hold up a finished ornament and say:

“I made this.”

HOW MY CHRISTMAS STORY BEGAN

Christmas has always been my favorite time of year.

When I was little, I loved watching my mother open the old ornament boxes. Every decoration seemed to carry a memory—someone’s name, a family trip, a Christmas morning, or a person we still missed.

I wanted to make something that could carry memories too.

My first handmade ornament was not perfect. The colors were uneven, the ribbon was too long, and I had to ask for help more than once.

But my mother did not finish it for me.

She sat beside me and said:

“Take your time. You are allowed to learn.”

So I kept working.

The next ornament was better. Then I made another. Slowly, crafting became more than a holiday activity. It became a way for me to express myself, develop new skills, and show people what I was capable of doing.

WHY I CREATED THIS 250TH ANNIVERSARY ORNAMENT

In 2026, America celebrates 250 years since 1776.

To me, freedom is not only something written in history books.

Freedom also means having the opportunity to learn.

It means being included.

It means being trusted with responsibility.

And it means having the chance to create a future based on what I can do—not on what other people assume I cannot do.

That is why I wanted this ornament to combine Christmas memories with the spirit of America’s 250th anniversary.

The patriotic colors, festive details, winter characters, stars, and commemorative centerpiece come together as a keepsake for this once-in-a-generation celebration.

FINISHED BY HAND, ONE PIECE AT A TIME

I work carefully because every small detail matters to me.

Each ornament goes through several steps:

Selecting and arranging the decorative elements

Adding color and small painted details

Positioning the centerpiece

Connecting the hanging pieces

Checking the ribbon and balance

Inspecting the finished ornament before it is packed

I may need more time than someone working on an assembly line.

But this is not an assembly line.

Every ornament receives my attention, patience, and effort. Small variations may appear between pieces, and I believe those differences are part of what makes handmade work meaningful.

No two creative journeys are exactly alike—and no two handmade ornaments have to be perfectly identical.

A CHRISTMAS KEEPSAKE WITH A STORY

Mass-produced decorations can fill a Christmas tree.

A meaningful ornament becomes part of the family.

Hang it each December as a reminder of:

  • America’s 250th anniversary
  • The Christmas you celebrated in 2026
  • The people who gathered around your tree
  • The value of patience and perseverance
  • The importance of giving everyone an opportunity

Years from now, it can still bring back the story of a historic Christmas—and the young artist who refused to let other people’s expectations define her future.

MORE THAN AN ORNAMENT

Crafting has helped me become more patient, confident, and independent.

Each completed piece reminds me that I can learn something difficult, finish what I start, and create something another person may treasure.

When someone chooses my work, I do not want them to feel sorry for me.

I want them to see the time I invested.

I want them to see the details I worked hard to complete.

I want them to see an artist who is still learning, improving, and building a future.

Your encouragement helps me continue creating, but it also gives me something equally important:

The confidence to believe that my work has value.
